Why Spring Cleaning Matters More in Central Washington
Central Washington winters are tough on homes. Between the dry, dusty climate, hard water mineral buildup, and months of closed-up indoor air, spring is when your home needs the most attention. A thorough spring clean isn't just about making things look nice — it's about removing allergens, preventing mold, and resetting your home for the warmer months ahead.
Living in the Coulee Dam region — whether you're in Grand Coulee, Electric City, Coulee City, or the surrounding communities — you know that our homes deal with challenges most generic cleaning guides don't cover. Here's what actually matters.
Kitchen Deep Clean
- Pull out the fridge and stove — vacuum and wipe behind and underneath (dust collects fast in our dry climate)
- Clean inside the oven, microwave, and dishwasher — baked-on grease and mineral deposits build up over winter
- Descale faucets and sinks with white vinegar — Grand Coulee's hard water leaves visible mineral buildup
- Clean out and organize the pantry — check for expired items from winter stocking-up
- Wipe down cabinet fronts, especially above the stove where grease mixes with airborne dust
- Run a cleaning cycle on the dishwasher with vinegar to remove hard water deposits
The hard water in the Coulee Dam area is some of the hardest in Washington. A 50/50 white vinegar and water solution is your best friend for faucets, showerheads, and glass. Let it soak for 30 minutes before wiping.
Bathrooms
- Scrub tile grout — Central WA humidity swings cause mildew in bathroom corners
- Remove and soak showerheads in vinegar to clear hard water mineral buildup
- Clean exhaust fans — dust buildup reduces their effectiveness at removing moisture
- Wash shower curtains and liners or replace if mildew has set in
- Wipe down all surfaces, including behind the toilet and under the vanity
Living Areas & Bedrooms
- Wash all curtains and blinds — they trap months of dust and pollen from our dry climate
- Flip and vacuum mattresses — dust mites thrive during dry winters
- Wipe ceiling fans and light fixtures top-to-bottom — first use after winter sends dust everywhere
- Clean all baseboards — dust settles heavily in homes with forced-air heating
- Deep vacuum under furniture and in corners — don't just get the visible areas
- Wash all bedding including pillows and comforters — refresh everything after winter
Windows & Exterior Touch-Up
- Clean inside and outside of all windows — Central WA dust coats glass fast
- Vacuum window tracks and sills — sand and dirt accumulate in the channels
- Clean sliding door tracks (patio doors collect debris all winter)
- Wipe down entry doors and handles — first impressions matter
- Clean out the garage or mudroom entryway — winter gear can go into storage
HVAC & Air Quality
- Replace all furnace and HVAC filters — especially important before pollen season kicks in
- Vacuum all heating vents and registers throughout the house
- Open windows on mild days to flush out stale winter air
Spring pollen hits Central Washington hard, especially sagebrush and grass pollens. If anyone in your household has allergies, start with HVAC filters and window cleaning first — these make the biggest difference for indoor air quality.
